Povos indígenas sem rótulos.
I´m a little bit late, but I wanted to write about Indigenous People’s Day celebrated in Brazil on April 19th. We still picture indigenous people as in the 16th Century, but googling a little bit more, you will see they haven’t frozen in time, they are active, they protest, they are great professionals, they have initiatives we barely see in “urban people” from big cities who are expected to come with all innovation in the country. According to Census 2010, there are 897,000 indigenous people in Brazil, less than 1% of the Brazilian population, since 517,000 live in demarcated lands, which means it is intended to guarantee their rights for the land and keep invaders away. There are 305 ethnicities and, believe it or not, 274 indigenous languages, and there are still people who say Brazil is a monolingual country! Keeping talking about estimative, 77% are literate and speak Portuguese, the official language in Brazil and around 43% speak an indigenous language. Below you will see some links about Indigenous Brazilian musicians in a very interesting article written by The Guardian in Octorber 2020¹. Unfortunately, people abroad know more about what our Indigenous people have been doing than us who live in Brazil. There is also a vídeo on YouTube showing na initiative from the ‘Suruis’ (a tribe of Rondonia e Mato Grosso)², who went after Google to ask them to include their heritage on Google Earth (there is also a link of it down below)³. While we think that Indigenous people still use arrows and bows as in the 1500’s, they use the technology in their favor. While we talk so much about Social Emotional Skills for the 21st Century as something brand new, they’ve always share it through their stories, by the way one of the best storytellers groups in the world. They teach as lessons about empathy, respect, among other things. They truly discuss environmental issues with the intention to solve them, such as deforastation, wildfires, wast of natural resources and also promotes sustainability. In 2018, Joenia Wapichana was elected a congreswoman representing Roraima, a Northern Brazilian state. Besides being the first indigenous woman holding such position in the government, she is a lawyer who advocates for indigenous causes, preservation of culture, health, education for native Brazilian ethnic groups and so on.4 They are doctors, lawyers, congress members, musicians, teachers, students. People struggling to be part of their country without being invisible, labels and prejudice. They want to be recognized by their own ethnicities, cultures and languages, not only as indigenous peoples, but also as Brazilians, Suruís, Xavante, Ticuna, Guajajara, Guarani...

Estou um pouco atrasada, mas queria escrever sobre o Dia do Índio comemorado no Brasil no dia 19 de abril.
Ainda imaginamos os indígenas como no século 16, mas pesquisando um pouco mais, você verá que eles não pararam no tempo, são ativos, protestam, são grandes profissionais, têm iniciativas que mal vemos nas “pessoas urbanas” das grandes cidades que imagina-se vir com todas as inovações do país.
Segundo o Censo 2010, existem 897 mil indígenas no Brasil, menos de 1% da população brasileira, sendo que 517 mil vivem em terras demarcadas, o que significa que se pretende garantir seus direitos sobre a terra e afastar os invasores. São 305 etnias e, acredite ou não, 274 línguas indígenas, e ainda há quem diga que o Brasil é um país monolíngue! Continuando a falar em estimativas, 77% são alfabetizados e falam português, a língua oficial do Brasil, e cerca de 43% falam uma língua indígena.
Abaixo você verá alguns links sobre músicos indígenas brasileiros em um artigo muito interessante escrito pelo The Guardian em outubro de 2020¹. Infelizmente, as pessoas no exterior sabem mais sobre o que o nosso povo indígena tem feito, do que nós que vivemos no Brasil.
Há também um vídeo no YouTube mostrando uma iniciativa dos ‘Suruís’ (uma tribo da região de Rondônia e Mato Grosso)², que foram atrás do Google para pedir que incluíssem sua cultura no Google Earth (também há um link abaixo)³.
Embora pensemos que os indígenas ainda usam flechas e arcos como em 1500, eles usam a tecnologia a seu favor. Embora falemos tanto sobre as habilidades de Inteligência Emocional para o Século 21 como algo novo, eles sempre compartilham isso por meio de suas histórias, aliás, um dos melhores grupos de contadores de histórias do mundo. Eles ensinam sobre empatia, respeito, entre outras coisas. Eles realmente discutem as questões ambientais com o intuito de resolvê-las, como desmatamentos, incêndios florestais, desperdício de recursos naturais e também promovem a sustentabilidade.
Em 2018, Joenia Wapichana foi eleita deputada representando Roraima, estado do Norte do Brasil. Além de ser a primeira mulher indígena a ocupar tal cargo no governo, ela é advogada que defende as causas indígenas, preservação da cultura, saúde, educação das etnias indígenas brasileiras e assim por diante.4 Eles são médicos, advogados, deputados, músicos, professores, alunos. Pessoas lutando para fazer parte do seu país sem serem invisíveis, rótulos e preconceitos. Eles querem ser reconhecidos por suas próprias etnias, culturas e línguas, não apenas como povos indígenas, mas também como brasileiros, suruís, xavantes, ticunas, guajajaras, guaranis...
